Age spots, also known as liver spots, are typically those brown, black or gray spots that show up on your face, hands, arms and shoulders. These spots normally occur in people over 50 years old, but can happen to younger people as well, and are the result of an over-production of melanin.
Freckles are similar to age spots in that they are an over-production of skin pigment as a result of exposure to the sun. However, freckles are typically smaller and occur in younger, adolescent skin. Most often, freckles fade as the person ages, although individuals with hereditary freckles can have them their whole life.
The best way to stop age spots or freckles is to prevent them. Avoiding sun exposure and using a good sun block are two ways of keeping these at bay.
